Met Gala Review from a Wannabe!!!
✰ ✰ ✰
So if you weren’t watching the Celtics or Bruins last night, you were probably tuning in to “Fashion’s Biggest Night” aka The Met Gala.
The Met Gala or Met Ball is a fundraising event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institution. The gala is hosted on the first Monday of May every year in New York City. This event pairs up A-list celebrities with designers to create over the top costumes & pieces of art to walk up an extravagant carpet. The event was founded by Eleanor Lambert in 1948 & is now organized by Vogue magazine. Editor-in-chief of Vogue, Anna Wintour & a chair of the event since 1995 oversees the benefit and she has the final say on the exclusive guest list.
You can actually purchase tickets for this event… $30,000 per person/$275,000 per table.
The first Met Gala was just a dinner & the tickets only cost $50. 🙂
Designers, brands, New York High Society, & other companies usually are the ones purchasing the tables, for example YouTube bought their own table this year.
The Met Ball pairs up designers with top tier celebrities to create a vision of what they believe embodies the theme of that year’s ball.
Sunday night, my sister & I were excited thinking about watching the celebrities walk the carpet!! Kristen & I both are obsessed with clothes, makeup, & celebrities so we really look forward to every “red carpet” event & award show! We were looking at past outfits & themes & looked up what this year’s theme was… which was Camp: Notes on fashion. Right away my sister & I were super confused ??? But the theme is based on Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay Notes on “Camp.” You can read the full article here.
The short version of the theme: over the top.
Camp definition:
-
deliberately exaggerated and theatrical in style, typically for humorous effect.
My personal opinion of the theme is: there is no theme. There’s no rules, no limits, anything in exaggeration is on theme.
This is what CAMP means to these Celebs!
Cole Sprouse: “[camp] best described as an inside joke… the people who get it, get it & the people who don’t, don’t.”
Harry Styles: “enjoyment, fun, no judgement.”
Miley Cyrus: “camp is about being authentic.”
The theme of this exhibition is decided by Andrew Bolton who is the Head Curator of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. He has the theme of the Met Gala chosen for the next 3 years!
Previous themes have been Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination, Manus x Machina, Punk: Chaos to Couture, & China: Through the Looking Glass.
The 2019 Met Gala was co-chaired by Lady Gaga, Alessandro Michele, Harry Styles, & Serena Williams.

The people that I was most excited to see were the Jenner sisters… OF COURSE, Tom & Gisele (basically New England royalty), & Harry Styles. Let me tell you.. they did not disappoint.
OKAY & NOW WHAT YOU ALL HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR MY TOP FAVORITE LOOKS OF THE NIGHT!!!!!
Elle Fanning. My sister & I were in COMPLETE SHOCK when we saw her arrive on the pink carpet. She always gave us those “America’s Sweetheart” vibes, but she came out as A STUNNING Malibu Barbie in her Miu Miu.
Lili Reinhart & Cole Sprouse. Aka Jughead & Betty. This is both their second Met Gala & a one year anniversary of them officially announcing that they are a couple. 🙂
Saoirse Ronan. In Gucci!
Ciara. She stepped onto the pink carpet & I honestly didn’t want her to get off. Best hair of the night!
Tom & Gisele. I am not going to lie to you, they arrived & I immediately started crying because they are absolute perfection! Gisele has been attending the Met Gala since she was 19 & this is their 11th Met Gala together!
Candice Swanepoel & Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. My all-time favorite VS Angels & they did not disappoint.
Okay….. hands down. My sister & my’s absolute favorite & highly anticipated looks of the night…..
Kendall & Kylie Jenner. We’ve been insta-stalking them since instagram was created & we’ve been keeping up ever since. They looked absolutely stunning for being compared to Cinderella’s ugly step-sisters.

Some people think this event is SO over the top, but I think it’s an amazing opportunity for designers to express themselves in an event that is all about fashion. It’s a night for the creators behind the looks to debut their hard work & on some of the best looking people, no doubt. While the big name designers are usually always in attendance, there are a significant amount of lesser known designers who get to debut their pieces of art as well. Yes, my sister & I sat through the entire 4-HOUR “pink carpet” & NO we are not ashamed. This was SO FUN to write! There were definitely waaaaay more looks that I loved, but these are my standouts. Hope you loved this fashion review from a wannabe. Maybe one day I’ll get to go… probably not lol, but a girl can dream.
Xo, Kel.
